enjoying a holiday in the sun while lamenting about the lack of visitors to this beautiful re-gion due to the revolution - and so began the second chapter in the history of Vale do Lobo. Sander van Gelder was a self-made man who had built up the biggest chain of jewel-lers in Holland before selling them at the age of 37, yet deciding that he was still too young to retire.

After enjoying the Algarve in 1975 he re-turned with the intention of buying land to build himself a property but instead of pur-chasing a single plot he ended up buying the entire resort in 1977!

For the next nearly 30 years Sander van Gelder used his vision and business prowess to develop the resort into a premier luxury development, picking up where Sir Richard had left off.

It wasn’t an easy start for Sander van Gelder who encountered many problems in trying to upgrade the infrastructure and standards to begin with, making important and sometimes controversial decisions to en-sure the success of the resort as a whole. The latest chapter of Vale do Lobo be-gan in 2006 when the resort was bought by a group of Portuguese and international inves-tors and saw Diogo Gaspar Ferreira take over

Nessa mesma altura, um jovem empresá-rio Holandês, enquanto desfrutava de férias no Algarve, mais propriamente na Praia da Rocha, constatava, com tristeza, como o impacto da revolução havia penalizado esta bela região, na altura com uma acentuada quebra de visitantes, e assim se dá início ao segundo capítulo da histó-ria de Vale do Lobo.

Sander van Gelder era um homem de mérito próprio, fundador da maior cadeia de joalharia de sempre na Holanda, antes de a vender com apenas 37 anos de idade, mas era ainda muito jovem para se aposentar.

Depois de desfrutar de umas férias no Algar-ve em 1975, o empresário Holandês regressou à região com o objectivo de adquirir um lote para construção de uma moradia mas, ao descobrir Vale do Lobo, decide então ficar com todo o empreendimento. Estávamos em 1977. Ao longo dos 30 anos que se seguiram, Sander van Gelder aplicou toda a sua visão e habilida-de para o negócio para desenvolver o resort e o converter num empreendimento turístico de excelência, dando assim continuidade ao sonho que Sir Richard Costain havia iniciado.

Não foi tarefa fácil para Sander van Gelder iniciar a sua intervenção, encontrando muitos problemas na tentativa de melhorar as infra- -estruturas e elevar os níveis de qualidade que pretendia, mas era para ele um aliciante desa-fio, acabando por tomar importantes decisões, por vezes controversas, de forma a assegurar, sempre, o sucesso do resort como um todo.
